1. How can I distinguish between the old and the new model Y steering wheel?
You only need to look at the position of the airbag hole under the steering wheel to distinguish. If the two holes are on the left and right sides of the steering wheel, it’s mean that is the old model steering wheel. If the two holes are on one side of the steering wheel, it’s mean that is the new model steering wheel.( See the figure below)

The quality of the wheel is excellent, the stitching on the leather is perfect and it feels great.
I was a bit scared about the installation but after watching some youtubers I went ahead. THE most difficult part was finding the clips inside the old wheel which need to be pushed simultaneously from both sides.It took me about 15 minutes of fiddling until I got the clips to release the airbag.
The second most difficult part was loosening the center 10mm hex bolt holding the steering wheel on…using an extender and a rather long 1/2″ drive torque wrench I had to use all my strength to turn the wrench while holding the steering wheel to keep it from turning.
Easy as pie after that and after about an hour or so of driving and adjusting the wheel position and my seat position I am comfortable with using this new wheel. Not just comfortable but excited to drive my car…Its like flying an aircraft or piloting a spaceship! This wheel adds a new dimension to my Tesla and looks fantastic.

I still love the way it feels and how it matches the doors. Carbon fiber looks and feels great and does not attract fingerprints. Hand placement at the bottom of the steering ring wheel while auto pilot is engaged is very comfortable. Turns are easy by pushing the top left and right corner of the steering wheel. Only took a few days to really get used to everything. It was very easy to install. It’s worth mentioning that I didn’t buy the carbon fiber at first, but that was a mistake, I later bought the carbon fiber cover separately, but it’s expensive, I recommend you to buy the carbon fiber look steering wheel.
